From the summer of 2013 until the early winter of 2016, I worked as the estimator for a small company that manufactured plastic fasteners. My job was to determine, given all the variables (material, labor, machinery, etc.) how much to charge the customer for a given product.
The owner of the business, a methadone addict prone to anger, took a shine to me once word got out that I was a musician, and he started pulling me into his office for long spiels about jazz harmonica, Jerry Lewis, and Joe Bonamassa. Because his lectures were regularly, and frequently, punctuated with bouts of incoherent rage, I began spending as much of the workday as I could away from the factory.
My preferred escape was the local Stop & Shop, where I would grab a sandwich and eat while parked near a small Off-Track Betting facility. It was here, watching bettors come and go, and seagulls fight over food scraps, that I began to jot down the ideas that would eventually turn into this album.
I'm not sure it matters that you know these things, but this is where I was, and this is what I was doing when these songs first came around.
So far as I know, the machines are still whirring, the seagulls are still battling, and the bettors are still betting.
